Ways to Use The Health Resource Guide
The Health Resource Guide contains a listing of the names and telephone numbers (and in many cases the addresses) of organizations and agencies that provide resources for comprehensive school health education. This listing is divided into the following headings:
1001 Mental and Emotional Health
1001 Family Living
1001 Growth and Development
1001 Nutrition
1001 Personal Health
1001 Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs
1001 Communicable and Chronic Diseases
1001 Injury Prevention and Safety
1001 Consumer and Community Health
1001 Environmental Health
1001 Joint Committee on Health Education
There is a separate section that provides a listing of the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the professional organizations that were represented on The Joint Committee for Health Education Standards: The American Cancer Society; The American School Health Association; The Association for the Advancement of Health Education; The School Health Education and Services Section, American Public Health Association; and The Society of State Directors of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.
Several agencies and professional organizations that are listed in The Health Resource Guide provide free and/or inexpensive materials. They may provide pamphlets, curricula, kits, videos, and films. They also may provide services such as speakers bureaus, support groups, and screening programs. They may have hotline numbers. Hotline numbers can be dialed to obtain immediate assistance. Teachers may want to share these hotline numbers with their students. They may want to have students write to these agencies and organizations to obtain further information when they are writing reports or preparing to give oral presentations. Teachers also may want to have students explore health careers available at these agencies and organizations.
