What’s Down in the Forest?

http://pec.jun.alaska.edu/~wrightk
Forest Unit.pdf--Standards: Science, Language Arts
To investigate the plants growing in their backyard, my fourth grade students studied the habitat around their elementary school. This is what we found out about the boreal forest around us in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Solar System Unit

http://pec.jun.alaska.edu:16080/~meyerv/
Solar system.pdf --Standards: Science, technology, Arts, Language Arts
This project-based unit is designed to introduce the solar system to students in grades K-3. The students culminating group project answers the essential question: Why can we live on Earth? Can we live on other planets? The students create their own three dimensional planet and justify how the planet would support life to a panel of students and teachers. Students will explore the relationships between the Sun and the Earth, how planets orbit the sun, and what elements are needed to support life for space exploration.

Nutrition Unit

http://pec.jun.alaska.edu:16080/~galushl/
Nutrition Unit.pdf--Standards: health and technology
Students will learn the components to a healthy meal and how to incorporate nutrition into their own life. Students will use their gained knowledge to make a PowerPoint presentation answering the essential question, "What makes a healthy meal for you?"

Weather Unit: Rain, Rain, Go Away

http://pec.jun.alaska.edu/~lovej
Weather Unit.pdf--Standards: Science and Technology
In this unit students watch weather forecasts on television and on Internet weather sites to discover the variables measured by weather forecasters. They participate in group investigations to discover ways to simulate and measure these weather variables. In groups of 2-3, students record weather variables for a specific city for a three-week period and use this data to make a three day forecast for their chosen city. The group’s data and forecast is organized using a spreadsheet, graphs, and a slide show. Each group uses a slide show to present their data to the rest of the class at the Room 19 Weather Summit
