It is the policy of this state that the purpose of education is to help ensure that all students will succeed in their education and work, shape worthwhile and satisfying lives for themselves, exemplify the best values of society, and be effective in improving the character and quality of the world about them.

To ensure quality standards-based instruction to improve academic achievement for all students.

Core Services

  • Provide and evaluate a comprehensive student and school standards, assessment and accountability system based on student, school, educator, and culturally responsive standards.
  • Provide and support standards-based professional development and mentoring for Alaska’s educators.
  • Provide a statewide program to ensure all students have the foundational skills required for success.
  • Secure and award educational funding to school districts and other educational organizations.
  • Providing high quality data to school districts and stakeholders.

Alaska Joins Multi-State Assessment Consortium

April 19. "The Smarter Balanced assessment will allow us to compare our students more closely with those around the country and confirm the rigor of Alaska's standards compared to the Common Core," said Alaska Education Commissioner Mike Hanley.

James Fields Joins State Board of Education & Early Development

April 18. James Fields of Glennallen will serve a five-year term in a seat reserved for the regional educational attendance areas, the school districts in the unorganized borough.

State Board Seeks Comment on Proposed Early-Literacy Screenings.

April 18. The screenings would help teachers identify students experiencing delays in attaining early-literacy skills in kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 2, and for certain 3rd-graders.

State Board Adopts New Regulations for Educator Evaluations

December 10. Under the regulations, districts will evaluate whether a teacher is exemplary, proficient, basic or unsatisfactory on each of seven content standards and on student growth.
